Cigna enrollment moves through two tracks that have to line up. First is credentialing: Cigna verifies your license, education, training, work history, malpractice coverage, board status, and sanctions history, pulling most of that from your CAQH ProView profile. Second is contracting and network loading: a participation agreement is issued and signed, then loaded into Cigna systems so claims adjudicate in-network and an effective date is assigned to your record.

The mistake we see most often is treating credentialing approval as the finish line. A provider can be fully credentialed and still have claims deny because the contract has not loaded, the effective date is unconfirmed, or the wrong tax ID or service location was tied to the record. We work both tracks in parallel and do not call the job done until your record is verifiably live in the Cigna provider portal.

Cigna relies on CAQH ProView for primary credentialing data, so a clean, current CAQH profile is the single biggest predictor of a smooth Cigna enrollment. The request stalls when the profile is incomplete, the attestation has lapsed, malpractice coverage shows a gap, work history has unexplained breaks, or Cigna has not been granted authorization to access the record.

Cigna is not one network. For group practices and facilities, Cigna ties each provider to a group tax ID, a group participation agreement, and one or more service locations. Every new provider must be credentialed individually, then linked to the existing group agreement and loaded under the correct TIN and address. A single mismatched location or NPI can cause claims to pay out-of-network even after credentialing is complete.

The quieter killer is the handoff between credentialing and contracting. Cigna may finish credentialing and then go silent while the participation agreement sits unsigned or unloaded. A clean Cigna credentialing and contracting cycle typically runs in the range of 60 to 120 days, sometimes longer when contract loading lags behind credentialing approval, when a panel is closed and needs a network exception, or when CAQH data has to be corrected before review can begin.
